I woke up late in San Francisco, had a relaxed breakfast and a short walk around Union Square district. Took some pics of cable cars. I left at about 1:30 ish from the hotel and make my way thru the city towards the west side. My plan was to make it to Halfmoon Bay, a short 55 km and mild first day. I have done zero training.
The day went plenty fine, and I played around with my new GoPro helmet cam, so I wasn't sure how to use it yet. The remote control works just fine once you figure it out.
It took a little bit longer than I thought to get there, and I arrived at roughly 6pm. The first hotel I tried was fully booked. And the next, and the next, and the next. I went back to the first hotel I visited and asked if they can call around. They said every hotel is booked, but they would try. After calling a few without luck, they did find one room left at the Americas Best Value, and I reserved it. It was back north about 5km, so I backtracked a bit. I got the last room in the entire city, for $191, and it was almost dark out by the time I got there. I'm not sure what I would have done.
I showered, grabbed a cab back into town ($15 each way) for dinner and a few beers. California might be a budget buster.
I compiled a short video of my first day, which you can see here, and crashed. 80km to Santa Cruz tomorrow.
